I Love Beading: 25 Projects That Will Show You How to Bead Easily and Quickly $0.95 Beading is one of the easiest and most popular of all crafts. A 2006 survey in Craftrends showed that 42 percent of all crafters now purchase beads annually. Beading is especially hot with under-35ers who can’t resist the opportunity to create their own cheap and fashionably funky handcrafted jewelry pieces. In I Love Beading, Juju Vail teaches all the beading basics, from choosing beads, stringing supplies, closures, and jump rings to cutting and working with wire. Those new to the craft will learn a variety of beading stitches from the peyote to the daisy chain; embellishments such as fancy knots and beadweaving; and fun touches such as making tassels and adding beads to buttons, curtains, and clothing. The 25 original projects range from a spiral chain bracelet, earrings, and multistrand necklaces to a woven beaded purse and a sophisticated choker. Each comes with step-bystep instructions, illustrations, and photographs. Perfect for beginners as well as more experienced beaders looking for new ideas, the fi nished projects in I Love Beading will all make great gifts—as will the book itself. |

Indigo’s Bracelet $5.44 Indigo’s Bracelet is a children’s book for parents and children who dare to journey into themselves. The story is about Indigo, a ten-year-old girl, who chooses to learn about herself by listening to her inner voice instead of believing what other people say about her. Rather than getting caught in the storm of negative thoughts, Indigo works with her magical bracelet, a family heirloom, and learns how self-awareness reveals her many “gifts.” Through this heartfelt story you will see how Indigo comes to accept her inner wisdom and trust the teachings of the bracelet. This mystical book shows how self-discovery can be magically adventurous and become the foundation from which to build self-esteem. On a grander scale, Indigo’s Bracelet demonstrates to parents and children that spiritual enlightenment is ageless. “‘Indigo’s Bracelet’ is a delightful and endearing story of a young girl who learns to trust her inner voice. I was so touched by the book that I passed it on to my daughters, 9 and 12. Both voracious readers themselves, they absolutely loved it! I highly recommend this book for both children and the parents who love them.” ~Shonagh Home, author, ‘Ix Chel Wisdom: 7 Teachings from the Mayan Sacred Feminine’ “As a grandmother I think this is a sophisticated and believable story that teaches the wisdom we carry within. It’s heartfelt message is about self-esteem, which begins to get faint as young girls enter their pre-teens. I co-authored a workshop to teach middle school girls life skills and I appreciate Alexandra’s focus in this book.” Gandolfa Stegmann, Phoenix, Arizona |

The Shadow Catcher: A Novel By Marianne Wiggins $15 Following her National Book Award finalist, Evidence of Things Unseen, Marianne Wiggins turns her extraordinary literary imagination to the American West, where the life of legendary photographer Edward S. Curtis is the basis for a resonant exploration of history and family, landscape and legacy.
The Shadow Catcher dramatically inhabits the space where past and present intersect, seamlessly interweaving narratives from two different eras: the first fraught passion between turn-of-the-twentieth-century icon Edward Curtis (1868-1952) and his muse-wife, Clara; and a twenty-first-century journey of redemption.
Narrated in the first person by a reimagined writer named Marianne Wiggins, the novel begins in Hollywood, where top producers are eager to sentimentalize the complicated life of Edward Curtis as a sunny biopic: ”It’s got the outdoors. It’s got adventure. It’s got the do-good element.” Yet, contrary to Curtis’s esteemed public reputation as servant to his nation, the artist was an absent husband and disappearing father. Jump to the next generation, when Marianne’s own father, John Wiggins (1920-1970), would live and die in equal thrall to the impulse of wanderlust.
Were the two men running from or running to? Dodging the false beacons of memory and legend, Marianne amasses disparate clues — photographs and hospital records, newspaper clippings and a rare white turquoise bracelet — to recover those moments that went unrecorded, “to hear the words only the silent ones can speak.” The Shadow Catcher, fueled by the great American passions for love and land and family, chases the silhouettes of our collective history into the bright light of the present. |

USED: The Ultimate Doo Wop Collection [Collectables 2 Disc] $18.99 If the contents of this two-CD set looks familiar, it’s because it was originally issued in Collectables’ History of Rock series as The Doo Wop Era, Part 1 and Part 2. Oddly, it’s the second volume in the set that contains the majority of garden variety hits like “In the Still of the Night,” “Book of Love,” “Long Lonely Nights,” “Get a Job,” and “Denise” with rarities like “I’m So Young” by the Students and “Ankle Bracelet” by the Pyramids largely dotting the landscape of Disc One. With the availability of Rhino’s excellent Doo-Wop Box series, there’s no reason to look at this set as the ‘ultimate collection’ by any stretch. If you’re really on a budget, you can buy these two discs separately. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi |
