A particular type of rhyming used in the traditional mantinades was also the one used in Erotokritos. Direct model of the work is the French popular medieval romance Paris et Vienne composed by Pierre de la Cypède, that was printed in 1487 and was widely diffused, as it was translated in many European languages. Erotokritos and Erophili by Georgios Hortatzis constitute the classic examples of Greek Renaissance literature. It remains a popular work until today, largely due to the music that accompanies it when it is publicly recited. Telling the story of a young British boy who, on his deathbed, converts Boosy, the Indian man who has taken care of him throughout his childhood, the book is dominated by imperialistic and evangelical themes. Like many of Rodin’s best-known individual sculptures, including The Thinker, the embracing couple depicted in the sculpture appeared originally as part of a group of reliefs decorating Rodin’s monumental bronze portal The Gates of Hell, commissioned for a planned museum of art in Paris. The couple were later removed from the Gates and replaced with another pair of lovers located on the smaller right-hand column. Malagueña Salerosa is attributed to Elpidio Ramírez and Pedro Galindo, published by Peer International in 1947 (monitored by BMI), although Mexican composer Nicandro Castillo questions the validity of that authorship.
