Read This Before Buying LeapPad Explorer. Monitor Your Chlid’s Learning Progress With LeapPad Explorer.

I purchased LeapFrog’s LeapPad Explorer about two weeks ago for my 4.5 years old son. And HE LOVES IT !

He gets occupied for hours and I am glad that he spends his time with something great and suitable for his age.
Before, my kid plays with my iPad whilst I’m not utilizing it. You will find times when I require to make use of my iPad and he nonetheless wants to play
with it. And as typical, he must understand and gives the iPad to me (hmmm, I know, ought to be me the 1 who should give understanding..). Nevertheless, I place a lot of office stuffs on that iPad thus I truly need it.
Well, sharing my iPad with my son is not really an excellent idea. Though sometimes we can arrange time to use it collectively, still it’s not my best intention. Why? Because iPad doesn’t have personality profile. Let me explain it a little bit, I want to install my iPad with some games, applications or e-books which are not suitable for kids. But I cannot. Simply because if I do so, then my son couldn’t play with it, because he can use all games / applications / readings which are not for his age. And I definitely do not want that to happen.
If only iPad offers character or user profile (like Windows) protected with password, then it is ideal for sharing with kids (except for time arrangement :( ). I can get my profile installed with stuffs that I want and when my son plays with it, he cannot open (or even see) my ‘belongings’. Would that be fantastic concept??
Also, iPad is as well expensive for kids to play with.

According to that reasons, I began to search a ‘cheaper’ pc tablet for my son. I study many reviews and comments for pc tablet. Few of them are specially designed for kids. This LeapPad Explorer stands out of the crowds. And, it’s specially created for kids ages 4-9 years old!

BY THE AUTHOR OF “GOOD, BETTER, BEST; OB, i Iei. i r H’AVB Or ;,:,;.. i -i, A ILAFPV WuHLJJ.” T. NELSON AND SONS, LONDON; EDINBURGH; AND NEW YOKK. f Slf FRANK HARPER. CHAPTER I. COMING TO TOWN. It was Frank’s first visit to a great city, and he looked at everything with wonder. The noise of the streets seemed to deafen him, and he scarcely escaped being run over by the carts and drays. ” This,” thought he, ” is New York! I really did not think it was so large!” And yet what Frank had seen as yet was less than the hundredth part of New York. But the rows of tall houses were so long, and the shop- windows were so fine, and the sights in the streets were so new and wonderful, that he was in a sort of rapture. After Frank had spent most of the day in rambling about, he found his feet very sore and his whole body wearied. After taking tea, he was shown to his lodgings, away up in the attic of a three-storey house. Now it was that he began to feel that he was in a strange place. Two larger boys occupied the same little chamber; they were, like himself, employed in stores, in John Street. They had already gone to bed. Frank sat down a fewmoments, and began to think over the events of the busy say, which seemed to him like a dream. At length, he opened his little red trunk, and the first thing he saw was the Pocket-Bible, which his mother had given him. You may be sure some tears fell upon it as he opened it. He found the marker, which his sister had embroidered for him,and read on it the words, ” 0 How I Love Thy Law !” He kneeled down, and prayed to God, with many tears, that he might be kept and blessed, now that he was separated from his parents. Frank’s bed was not so good as the one which he had left at Coventry; …

‘Round Midnight

Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. Prestige released Andy Bey & the Bey Sisters in 2000, which includes both the trio’s albums for the label on one disc, and that is definitely the way to go, although this short set does do a decent job showing off the range and talents of thi…

 10cc [Germany Bonus Tracks]

10cc [Germany Bonus Tracks]

$19.99

Displaying a command of pop styles and satire, 10cc shows that they are a force to be reckoned with on their first album. Hooks abound, harmonies shine, and instrumentation is dazzling without being overdone. Though charges of “self-consciously clever” could be leveled at the group, their command of witty, Anglo-styled pop is so impressive that even those criticisms must be weighed against the mastery of styles. All four members sing lead and are talented songwriters, and this leads to a wide variety of styles that add to their vision. Featuring their number one U.K. hit “Rubber Bullets,” 10cc wades through ten selections of satire and parody. Arguably, one of the best is the opening cut, “Johnny Don’t Do It,” a parody of all the “death discs” of the late ’50s and early 60s (the misunderstood “bad but really good” guy who is killed in a wreck). More contemporary and bitingly sarcastic is “Headline Hustler,” a commentary on the scandal-hungry, ravenous media. Medical facilities and the treatment afforded there is given ripe 10cc commentary in “The Hospital Song” (“And when I go, I’ll die of plaster casting love”). Whether doing loving parodies of the music they grew up with or satirizing contemporary issues, 10cc shows themselves to be top-level purveyors of pop on their debut recording. Some might criticize the group for being too self-satisfied with their own intelligence, but there is no denying the true craftsmanship and humor on their 1973 release. [The German edition changes the track order and adds five bonus tracks: "Hot Sun Rock," "4% of Something," "Rubber Bullets (Single Version)," "Waterfall," and "Bee in My Bonnet."] ~ Michael Ofjord, Rovi

 21 Number Ones

21 Number Ones

$9.99

Given Kenny Rogers’ long and successful recording career, it would seem that a collection like 21 Number Ones would be a useful to way to collect all of his biggest and best hits. That’s not necessarily the case. First of all, this 2006 compilation has nothing from the First Edition, with whom he had his earliest hits, including “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” and “Ruby Don’t Take Your Love to Town.” Then, because of the nature of number one singles — once an artist has had one number one single, it’s easier to rack up subsequent singles, particularly on a genre-specific chart like Country, which is where nearly all of these 21 tracks charted — his more interesting music from the late ’70s and early ’80s is left behind in favor of the slick ballads of the second half of the ’80s. These are songs that did hit number one on the charts, but they’re a little samey and not is interesting as the singles he made on his way up the charts. That said, with the exception of the previously mentioned First Edition singles — and some other good ’70s sides like “Something’s Burning,” “Laura (What’s He Got That I Ain’t Got?),” and “Love Lifted Me” — all the big hits are here in their original hit versions, including the bonus track of the Kim Carnes duet “Don’t Fall in Love With a Dreamer,” which may not have hit number one, but made the Top Five on the Pop, Country, and Adult Contemporary charts. While it’s hard not to miss those First Edition songs, this is the best single-disc collection of Rogers’ biggest songs — it’s half the length of 2004′s 42 Ultimate Hits, after all, so many listeners may find this more manageable — which makes it both a useful overview and introduction. Plus, it has terrific song-by-song liner notes by Kenny Rogers himself, offering such insights as: “Around the world, I am known as the Gambler. When I go to Korea or Japan, for example, people see me and go, ‘Ah, the Gambler.’ The song really is a wonder…

 5150

The power struggle within Van Halen was often painted as David Lee Roth’s ego running out of control — a theory that was easy enough to believe given his outsized charisma — but in retrospect, it seems evident that Eddie Van Halen wanted respect to go along with his gargantuan fame, and Roth wasn’t willing to play. Bizarrely enough, Sammy Hagar — the former Montrose lead singer who had carved out a successful solo career — was ready to play, possibly because the Red Rocker was never afraid of being earnest, nor was he afraid of synthesizers, for that matter. There was always the lingering suspicion that, yes, Sammy truly couldn’t drive 55, and that’s why he wrote the song, and that kind of forthright rocking is evident on the strident anthems of 5150. From the moment the album opens with the crashing “Good Enough,” it’s clearly the work of the same band — it’s hard to mistake Eddie’s guitars, just as it’s hard to mistake Alex and Michael Anthony’s pulse, or Michael’s harmonies — but the music feels decidedly different. Where Diamond Dave would have strutted through the song with his tongue firmly in cheek, Hagar plays it right down the middle, never winking, never joking. Even when he takes a stab at humor on the closing “Inside” — joshing around about why the guys chose him as a replacement — it never feels funny, probably because, unlike Dave, he’s not a born comedian. Then again, 5150 wasn’t really intended to be funny; it was intended to be a serious album, spiked by a few relentless metallic rockers like “Get Up,” but functioning more as a vehicle to showcase Van Halen’s — particularly the guitarist’s — increasing growth and maturity. There are plenty of power ballads, in “Why Can’t This Be Love” and “Love Walks In,” there’s a soaring anthem of inspiration in “Dreams,” and even the straight-up rocker “Best of Both Worlds” is tighter and leaner than the gonzo excursions of “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher.” And that’s where Hagar come…

A Bay Breeze: A Novel Exploring the Concepts of Faith and Free Will

A Bay Breeze: A Novel Exploring the Concepts of Faith and Free Will

$13.5

Everyday billions of people wake up thinking that a god is watching over them as they freely make choices in their lives. Dr. Alan Kosciol, noted neurobiologist, once believed that to be true. But years of research have turned his notion of gods, faith and free will upside down. In this novel, Dr. Kosciol embarks on a visiting lecture series where he debates the concepts of spirituality and free choice. Returning to his alma mater, Alan finds himself face to face with Robert, his deeply religious brother, and Lori, a lost, but not forgotten, love. All three are united through a series of events that centers on a bioterrorist action that has potentially devastating consequences. However, an underlying theme revolving around the age-old debate of nature versus nurture, and of free will versus predestination, seeps into every page.A Bay Breeze is not simply another novel about human behavior. From the first page, the reader will begin to question not only the characters’ actions, but their own beliefs about gods, good and evil, and predestination. One cannot leave this experience without examining their own foundational beliefs in a god…. and wondering if they really have a free will to choose, or are they simply slaves to their own biochemistry.

In A Great Day for a Ballgame, narrator Fielding is a writer who sells a story to a fashion magazine and is invited to meet the literary editor Amelia West in her midtown New York office. It turns out shes a fan and, surprise, she instantly likes him in person. For his part, he too is hooked, attracted by her beauty but also by the disarming fact that she really is in tune with him. She can appreciate his wit, observations, and theories. As they start dating, she even understands his concept of a storyline dialoguetwo fictional characters, or real-life people, having a conversation that is moving toward the same end, so that their lines are interchangeable. At one point, when Amelia makes a comment, Fielding comically says, Thats my line. Except for the cigarettes, this could be a story of the present or future, but its also good to see it as a part of New Yorks past. I had a remarkable feeling that I was in one of my own stories, the Fielding character says.

A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me about Love, Friendship, and the Things That Really Matter

$31.99

An eloquent memoir of a young man’s life transformed by literature. In A Jane Austen Education, Austen scholar William Deresiewicz turns to the author’s novels to reveal the remarkable life lessons hidden within. With humor and candor, Deresiewicz employs his own experiences to demonstrate the enduring power of Austen’s teachings. Progressing from his days as an immature student to a happily married man, Deresiewicz’s A Jane Austen Education is the story of one man’s discovery of the world outside himself.A self-styled intellectual rebel dedicated to writers such as James Joyce and Joseph Conrad, Deresiewicz never thought Austen’s novels would have anything to offer him. But when he was assigned to read Emma as a graduate student at Columbia, something extraordinary happened. Austen’s devotion to the everyday, and her belief in the value of ordinary lives, ignited something in Deresiewicz. He began viewing the world through Austen’s eyes and treating those around him as generously as Austen treated her characters. Along the way, Deresiewicz was amazed to discover that the people in his life developed the depth and richness of literary characters-that his own life had suddenly acquired all the fascination of a novel. His real education had finally begun.Weaving his own story-and Austen’s-around the ones her novels tell, Deresiewicz shows how her books are both about education and themselves an education. Her heroines learn about friendship and feeling, staying young and being good, and, of course, love. As they grow up, they learn lessons that are imparted to Austen’s reader, who learns and grows by their sides.A Jane Austen Education is a testament to the transformative power of literature, a celebration of Austen’s mastery, and a joy to read. Whether for a newcomer to Austen or a lifelong devotee, Deresiewicz brings fresh insights to the novelist and her beloved works. Ultimately, Austen’s world becomes indelibly

A Jane Austen Education: How Six Novels Taught Me about Love, Friendship, and the Things That Really Matter

$25.95

TWO LOVERS. ‘ En amour, il y a toujours un qui aime I’autre. II etait decide a n’etre jamais plus que I’autre.’ Is unhappiness the invariable result of wrongdoing ? Is perfect content any proof of the innocence of one’s actions ? Does, or does not, the end practically justify the means in the great game of life? Miss Hamlyn had occasion to ask herself these questions more than once in the days following the time she spent at Aboo Simbel. And was she really doing wrong? she wondered. Could her word still be pledged to George when George himself, her own past life, whatever she had known or felt before she met Arthur, had faded out of her recollection like the idle dream of some night, waning and fading before the coming day? If she still thought of Ferris at times it was with a vague wonder, a question, a doubt. How much of thathalf-forgotten past was fancy?—how much of it ever existed after all ? Could those days that seemed so indistinct, so far away, have ever been the actual living days of her life ? Had she ever in sober earnest longed for the sight of George’s face—that face which came back to her now like the confused image of a dream? Had there indeed been a time when she thrilled responsively to each sound of George’s voice,—that voice whose very words now cost her an effort to recall ? And was a shadow like this to be suffered to stand in silent perpetual warning between her life and happiness,? A chance speech of Mrs. Hamlyn’s one day made her remember herindecision, her effort, her struggle with herself before Livingston joined their dahabeah at Assuan. Good Heavens! how far back it all seemed! How poor and weak and insufficient had been the obstructions to her love! How far off, how unreal they looked judged by this new standard of

And here are her special recipes, including her mother’s Tacos a la Delfina (“I swear these tacos are really good cold!”) and Granma Lupe’s Pasta (not macaroni but a savory mincemeat-like taco filling). Here, too, are tips on shopping, cooking, and serving: “Offer up the meal with gratitude and remember: Tacos are one of life’s greatest things!”"We live in chile country,” she adds. “We are blessed to be here. Food is more than food; it’s a culture. And tacos are more than tacos.”Chile country is the setting for Chávez’s magical, tragicomic fiction. And in A Taco Testimony she also tells wonderful stories that connect literature with culture and food with life along the Mexican-American border.”Time and love are the essence of all Mexican cooking,” Chávez says—including her spicy, juicy writing, and this feast of a book.

A Year In Letters From Sunflower Circle

$9.95

You’ll be so glad you met the residents of Sunflower Circle. They make a great team, despite being such disparate and colourful characters. Gloria can organise everything and everyone (including her increasingly forgetful husband) with tact and good humour; Ricardo’s practicality hides his touchingly sentimental side; whateverthe eventuality, techno man Darren will produce a gadget to cope with its demands; and if an artistic touch is required, Taffy and his flamboyant friends can be relied upon to handle the situation with flair and creativity.Observing them all is Emma, whose letters to her childhood friend, Angela, record the rural estate’s day-to-day happenings with love and insight. Through them we learn all about dragons in the fridge, false teeth on the lawn, musical pacemakers, smelly dogs and the spooky goings-on at Number Nine – is it really unoccupied? And the wisdom of children (and tea towels) recurs throughout this diverting, amusing, sometimes poignant but always heart-warming chronicle of a year in the life of a close-knit community.

 Antonio

Antonio

$17.96

This is an erotic historical romance based on a journal written at the start of the 16th century by a young man called Antonio, who grew up in the village of Cortona in northern Italy. His mother died in childbirth, his brother moved away to find work in Perugia, and he was left living with his father Giorgio, from whom he learned the trade of carpentry. The novel takes the form of a picaresque adventure in search of work. This leads to his meeting several of the famous artists of the time, painting frescoes in different churches. As he progresses past adolescence, he discovers women to his delight. Antonio is clearly an honest, generous, affectionate and good looking young man. As he moves from one village to another, he meets a variety of young women whose wishes and desires he is unable to resist.Increasingly he becomes aware of the wider world and the fractious politics of the time. The Borgias are in power in the Vatican, and Cesare Borgia is rampaging through Tuscany, working his way towards Cortona. He sends his agent, Leonardo da Vinci, to survey the local fortifications, and Antonio almost meets him. There is also a studious side to his nature, and he finds a mentor at the local monastery who teaches him how to write, and keeps him informed about the events of the day, including the scandals surrounding the Borgias. Other events include meeting a ghost at an ancient monastery, and consulting a soothsayer who reveals his future.Running through this story is a golden thread, with one end being his abiding love for a particular woman, the great love of his young life, who seems beyond his reach. As he moves from one romantic attachment to another, it is his true love who really occupies his thoughts. As his future unfolds, we see him holding onto that thread, and somehow hoping that he would never have to let it go. How the story is played out against the short term vicissitudes of his life is finally revealed in the last chapter. This

A profound and beautiful guide to the life of prayer from a leader in the 24-7 Prayer movementHere are six intimate portraits of God to help us know Him better. This delightfully illustrated book on prayer looks at how we see or imagine God, and how we can then approach Him. Countering misconceptions about God, these clear truths about the nature of God encourage confidence and intimacy with Him: God the artist, creator, who loves creative expression.God as good company, friend, one who enjoys our company and really likes us.God our protector/provider, redeeming the image of father through His faithful care of us.God our lifegiver, a nurturing God who gathers us in His arms and picks us up when we fall.God our teacher, guide, and life-coach: not handing out rules and regulations but giving practical insight for wisdom, health, and good living.God as physician, healer. He won’t always provide miracles, yet God does heal physically and emotionally, so we can approach with expectation and hope.”This exquisite little book leads us deeper into the most important discovery of our lives: a fuller, more familiar, encounter with God. . . . At the heart of Lisa Borden’s message is an ancient certainty that God’s love is constantly bubbling up and breaking through in the very simplest stuff of life.”–from the foreword by Pete Greig, author of God on Mute

Barefoot Contessa Parties! Ideas and Recipes for Easy Parties That Are Really Fun

$6.68

After more than twenty years of running Barefoot Contessa, the acclaimed specialty food store, Ina Garten published her first collection of recipes. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook was an overnight sensation, but it’s the kind of success that can only be grounded in years of experience. In it, Ina shared her ideas for familiar food but with outstanding flavor and — most important of all — recipes that really work. Now, with Barefoot Contessa Parties! Ina shares secrets she has gleaned from her years not only as a caterer but as a dedicated party giver. The keyword here is fun. Ina’s parties are easy to prepare and fun for everyone, including the host. Forget those boring Saturday-night dinners that just won’t end. With Ina’s advice, you’re certain to have all your friends saying, “Wasn’t that fun!”Ina has packed Barefoot Contessa Parties! with plans for pulling off parties like a pro, stories about her own parties, and tips on assembling food (rather than cooking everything) and organizing like a caterer. In the spring you can invite your friends to a party where they all make their own pizzas. Come summer, it’s into the garden for a lunch with grilled lamb and pita sandwiches that guests assemble themselves. In the autumn, when it’s not Thanksgiving, Ina roasts a fresh turkey, which her friends enjoy with popovers and a creamy spinach gratin. And on a snowy winter’s day, everyone is invited for a lunch buffet with seafood chowder and butternut squash and apple soup.Ever since Ina published her first book, people write, e-mail, and stop her on the street to say how much they love the food. She’s reached new heights here with recipes like sour cream coffee cake—the ultimate breakfast treat. Salads? The red lettuce, balsamic onions, and blue cheese; Chinese chicken salad; and panzanella may be the best you’ve ever tasted. Filet of beef is easy to make for a fancy dinner with oh-so-good gorgonzola sauce, or

 Batten the Hatches [Nettwerk]

Batten the Hatches [Nettwerk]

$11.99

Jenny Owen Youngs looks like she might be another typical, long-haired hippie waif with guitar — then she opens her mouth, and your jaw drops. Youngs’ voice has that delicate, childlike quality that plagues many a folksinging female, but when she digs into a song, the dissonance between her sweet alto and the acidic images she uses to paint her bittersweet portraits of life and love is startling. “Porchrail” opens the album with a backing band that sounds like the Violent Femmes. It’s a simple acoustic rocker, with a swing feel that conveys the nervous energy that floods the body when you see someone you really want and probably can’t have. The jittery beat and Youngs’ pleading vocal create a mood of panting desire held in check by shyness and insecurity. Meanwhile, “Fuck Was I” is a self-flagellating tale about being in thrall to a lover who can never do you any good, and yet the love abides. Her matter-of-fact vocal and the song’s lilting beat make her use of the F word actually sound shocking, something that’s increasingly hard to do in the 21st century. On “P.S.,” Youngs plays the banjo in an arrangement with French horn, cello, bass clarinet, and foot stomps. The result sounds kinda like a Tom Waits song, dripping with irony and full of unexpected musical touches. Every song here uses the same basic formula — dark thoughts set to uplifting music — but it’s a formula that works amazingly well. Youngs has an uncanny insight into the pains and insecurities that plague us all when we’re in that vulnerable, confused position of wanting love and feeling unworthy, or wanting out of a relationship and being unable to cut loose from the obsession that makes the pain hurt so good. She also has an original voice and an ability to find light even in the darkest situations, making this a very polished and cohesive first album. ~ j. poet, Rovi

Battle for Wine and Love: or How I Saved the World from Parkerization

“I want my wines to tell a good story. I want them natural and most of all, like my dear friends, I want them to speak the truth even if we argue,” says Alice Feiring. Join her as she sets off on her one-woman crusade against the tyranny of homogenization, wine consultants, and, of course, the 100-point scoring system of a certain all-powerful wine writer. Traveling through the ancient vineyards of the Loire and Champagne, to Piedmont and Spain, she goes in search of authentic barolo, the last old-style rioja, and the tastiest new terroir-driven champagnes. She reveals just what goes into the average bottle—the reverse osmosis, the yeasts and enzymes, the sawdust and oak chips—and why she doesn’t find much to drink in California. And she introduces rebel winemakers who are embracing old-fashioned techniques and making wines with individuality and soul.No matter what your palate, travel the wine world with Feiring and you’ll have to ask yourself: What do i really want in my glass?

Best in Hollywood: The Good, The Bad, And The Beautiful

$24.95

“In this autobiographical Best in Hollywood, you can share with me the golden age of Hollywood when she had unequaled world class. Now solidly in my eighties, I’m one of the few living actors who can hope to tell of the past glory and glamour of Hollywood as she really was way back when. This was the Hollywood where I lived, loved, and worked during the time when she was the ruling queen. This was the time of a wonderful movie industry where genuine actors and actresses created truly entertaining musicals, comedies, dramas, and action for an eager movie-going public.Even in those glorious golden days of Hollywood, my attempt to be a big winner was never all sunglasses and autographs. I tell here how I survived in a sometimes cruel town where a lifelong dream can be fulfilled or broken in a heartbeat. I didn’t escape without my share of scars.I’ve written this book for those who might enjoy reading about the experiences of a very lucky ragtag orphan from Kentucky. I thank God for the opportunities given me. I was blessed to be adopted and to be given both a desire to work hard and, just as important, a love of fishing. I’ve been in a few scraps along the way, but I’ve done my level best to become a successful actor and to grow as a person. If you’re curious about the good, the bad, and the beautiful of Hollywood-including The Dukes of Hazzard and many other adventures-it’s all in this book. I simply tell my story as I’ve lived it. I hope you enjoy it.”-James Best.

God gave children parents to guide them in their journeys into productive and responsible individuals. Wiley challenges parents to examine the values they want to implant in their children as she discusses a good self image, honesty, the love of God and the world he created as the values she considers most important.Wiley considers a good self image as the most necessary quality to possess to succeed in this world. She believes the mind controls not only what you think but how you feel and what you do. She discusses her son’s struggle with dyslexia, her struggle with a speech defect, and becoming a teacher. It always comes back to self esteem and believing in one’s self. One has to be honest with one’s self before one can accept herself for what she really is. This leads Wiley to honesty which she believes is second to self esteem in qualities needed to be responsible and successful. Wiley believes everyone has to believe in some higher power to have the strength necessary to succeed as a parent. For her, this authority is God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit all in one. He gives her the strength to cope no matter what happens.Wiley believes the most effective way of guiding children is through modeling. She also discusses guiding children into becoming responsible adults by setting limits and applying natural consequences. Parents have a responsibility to their children to love them unconditionally and model values for them rather than being responsible for what their children do. Communication is the key to success in any endeavor, and in families communication must begin with the parents and include the children. Wiley concludes her book by discussing ways toinclude fun; a family that plays together grows into a loving caring family.

She is married to a wonderful man who reads all her work, puts up with her jokes, and even does the shopping.

 Book Doctor: A Novel

Book Doctor: A Novel

$14.95

Inspired by the frustrations of writer’s block, the vagaries of modern romance, and a deep-seated love for reading, The Book Doctor combines urbane, sophisticated, mordantly funny storytelling with tremendous heart.Smart, independent, quirky, and well-read, Arlette Rosen makes her living helping people write the books they’ve always dreamed of, and she’s quite good at it. She likes this work, likes the freedom of someone else’s sentences, likes being able to change, in intuitive ways only she knows, small details here and there. By the time she meets new client Harbinger Singh, she has worked on sixty-four books, chosen from hundreds of submissions. Harbinger Singh makes his living as a tax attorney, but what he really wants to do is write a novel, a grand, sweeping saga he intends to call Hot and Dusty. While the romance that blooms between these two unlikely lovers is more about longing than lust, it triggers something in each that just might be called hope. With uncompromising wit and a fierce tenderness, Esther Cohen has written a modern-day comedy of manners about relationships, writer’s block, and the enduring-if elusive-creative spirit. Author Biography: Esther Cohen is the author of a previous novel, No Charge for Looking. She lives in New York City with her husband, a documentary film editor, and their teenage son.

Cartoon Marriage: Adventures in Love and Matrimony by the New Yorker’s Cartooning Couple

$24

What happens when two cartoonists for The New Yorker fall in love and marry? Lots of witty wordplay, skewering drawings, and a healthy dose of illustrative competition. For twenty years, veteran cartoonists Liza Donnelly and Michael Maslin have been exploring in their work the ins and outs of marriage. From whimsical and wacky to risqué and barbed, their humor allows us to laugh at our follies and foibles and the insanity that is inherent in the day-to-day workings of every marriage. From meeting, wooing, and dating to marrying, divorcing, and remarrying, from having sex to having kids, the course of true love never runs smooth–but it’s excellent fodder for talented humorists. Here, Donnelly and Maslin offer a his-and-hers view of marriage, a cartoon conversation about all that love entails. From the wedding day (“And do you, Louise, take Jack to be your husband until really, really pissed-off do you part?”) to cohabitation (“And this is where I go to escape from where I go to escape”) to parenting (“Dad says it’s all right with him if I watch TV as long as it’s not all right with you”), husband and wife give us hilarious insights into the way relationships work. Cartoon Marriage shares clever takes on male/female communication (“You could at least acknowledge the fact that I’m ignoring you”) and renovation (“I’ve made a few improvements, but the way you see him now is pretty much the way I found Harold eleven years ago”). And of course, what view of marriage would be complete without a trip to the bedroom: “Owen, look, the good-sex fairy.”Featuring more than two hundred hilarious cartoons, Cartoon Marriage is a deliciously witty true-to-life look at matrimony, children, happiness, connubial squabbling, and everything in between.

Caught by the Sea: My Life on Boats

$5.75

“Another such wave could easily be the end of us. I had to do something, fix something, save the boat, save myself. But what?” Gary Paulsen takes readers along on his maiden voyage, proving that ignorance can be bliss. Also really stupid and incredibly dangerous. He tells of boats that have owned him–good, bad, and beloved–and how they got him through terrifying storms that he survived by sheer luck. His spare prose conjures up shark surprises and killer waves as well as moonlight on the sea, and makes readers feel what it’s like to sail under the stars or to lie at anchor in a tropical lagoon where dolphins leap, bathed in silver. Falling in love with the ocean set Gary Paulsen on a lifelong learning curve and readers will understand why his passion has lasted to this day. “From the Hardcover edition.”

Chandlefort: In the Shadow of the Bear

$10.04

It has been just months since Clovermead Wickward discovered that she is really Demoiselle Cerelune Cindertallow — daughter of Lady Melisande Cindertallow, the sovereign of Chandlefort — and that the man she had called Father all her life was actually an embittered servant who stole her away when she was a baby. Since then, she has learned that she doesn’t wholly care for life inside the walls of Chandlefort, and that she doesn’t much like her mother’s expectations for how a Demoiselle should behave — especially the bit about not changing shape anymore. When you can turn into a bear, being forced to stay human can be deadly dull. Now Clovermead must confront dangerous secrets from her family’s troubled past when a mysterious stranger appears in Chandlefort. Perhaps he is the old friend of Clovermead’s real father, as he claims to be — or perhaps an old enemy of the Cindertallows who seeks a final revenge. When Clovermead unintentionally puts her mother’s life in mortal peril, her only chance to make amends and save the mother she has just begun to know is to set off on a dangerous journey to a distant abbey. The life of her mother, the salvation of Chandlefort, and the freedom of the bears enslaved by the overwhelming power of Lord Ursus all depend on Clovermead In this intense and compelling sequel to Clovermead, David Randall explores the strength of love, courage, and forgiveness in the battle of good and evil.

Chaplin Goes to Tampa: A Story about A Curious Kitty Cat

$15.49

Before I married many years ago, I never dreamed that I would write books, much less one about a cat. After all, I grew up with dogs, and loved every one of them. I really did not know much about cats. But that all changed when I met my wife, Jane Ann. Jane Ann, her sister Linda, and their brother Larry, had been around house cats most all of their lives. When Jane Ann and I were first married, Linda had a cat named Princess. As it turned out, Linda had to find a new home for Princess because her soon to-be husband had many allergies, including to cats. Since Jane Ann loved Princess, she asked me if I would agree to take Princess into our then new family. Of course, I was so in love with Jane Ann that I agreed to the idea without hesitation. As it turned out, Princess was not only a beautiful grey/blue lady Persian, but was the perfect cat. She was loved by our entire family from the very beginning, and especially by our two children, John and Becky. Princess brought our family much joy for many years. We were all so sad when Princess departed this earth for an even more heavenly place. After Princess, and similar to the fictionalized story you are about to read, along came our cat that we named Charlie Chaplin. Now let me tell you, Chaplin is not the perfect cat like Princess was. He is somewhat of a demanding and independent cat who gets into things he shouldn’t. We have all loved him nevertheless from the very beginning, quirks and all. The good news is that as he has moved into his senior years, Chaplin has slowly become more and more loving, albeit no less demanding. (He behaves like he should have all the entitlements of royalty!)Anyway, this male rogue of a cat has become widely known in the neighborhood. He wanders about in his black and white tuxedo kitty coat and displays his comedic Charlie Chaplin-like black mustache against the white part of his little face. He has fooled everyone else into thinkin

Kids love fast food. And the fast food industry definitely loves kids. It couldn’t survive without them. Did you know that the biggest toy company in the world is McDonald’s? It’s true. In fact, one out of every three toys given to a child in the United States each year is from a fast food restaurant. Not only has fast food reached into the toy industry, it’s moving into our schools. One out of every five public schools in the United States now serves brand name fast food. But do kids know what they’re eating? Where do fast food hamburgers come from? And what makes those fries taste so good? When Eric Schlosser’s best-selling book, Fast Food Nation, was published for adults in 2001, many called for his groundbreaking insight to be shared with young people. Now Schlosser, along with co-writer Charles Wilson, has investigated the subject further, uncovering new facts children need to know.In Chew On This, they share with kids the fascinating and sometimes frightening truth about what lurks between those sesame seed buns, what a chicken ‘nugget’ really is, and how the fast food industry has been feeding off children for generations.Featuring cover art by M. Christmas Gifts

$10.51

What is the best possible gift you can ever imagine, and who do you think gave you this gift? Think about all the wonderful things in your life and then decide what is really the mot important thing to you and why. What does Christmas mean to you? Penelope Dyan has an idea about Christmas and about Christmas gifts and she will tell you all about her ideas in this little book.Based on the concept of family and self awareness, Dyan uses her skills as a former early childhood educator to broaden the minds of little ones everywhere. Self awareness is part of any good school curriculum and young students are even tested on this subject. Common tests include draw yourself (this is where Dyan’s book ‘Sticks’ comes in handy.) and draw your family. These tests are generally used by educators to determine reading readiness and social development, and by simply reading these books and discussing the concepts presented and encouraging your child to draw himself (or herself) and family you can give your child a head start on performance of these fundamental skill tests. This book is also suitable as a Christmas gift for any age, and is much better to give or send than a Christmas card, because this book will tell the person who received it that you really care.Dyan is an award winning writer, and an attorney, as well as a former teacher, and her love and understanding of children permeates every single one of her child sized and child friendly books. There is a reason to celebrate the Christmas season, and the gifts under the Christmas tree are only one very, very small part of the big package that makes up Christmas. Cherish every moment.

Located in sunny Southern California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, CMC is one of five undergraduate institutions joined together in the Claremont Consortium. All five campuses are connected, and in some ways it’s kind of like a big university with different schools. Students can take classes at any of the campuses, join clubs, eat, and party across the borders. Sports and some academic programs are shared between the schools, but in other really important ways the schools are very distinct. The schools vary greatly in philosophy, atmosphere, and the makeup of the student bodies. Graduation requirements and core classes are different. Going to school at CMC is very different from going to school at Pomona, Mudd, Pitzer, or Scripps.- Hayes Humphreys, authorIf you want a school with a lot of spirit, let the current CMC students tell you how it is:CMCers love CMC, but it isn’t school spirit in the traditional sense. People don’t turn out to every football game to root for the Stags (although we’ll always come out to talk trash to Pomona), but the school spirit manifests itself mainly through the social life. CMCers are always looking for a new, creative, over-the-top, indulgent way to all have fun together. School spirit is best seen in big afternoon barbeques with Slip ‘N Slides down Green Beach, or in the wee hours of the marathon 24-hour party, or during an intense game of IM inner tube water polo.If you’re seriously considering CMC, check out what the studentsare saying about:Academics:”You’ll have a lot of homework and you’ll work really hard, but at the end of the semester, you’ll feel so great that you learned so much, and the good grade you earned will mean so much more.”“Most professors seem

Students return for the rest of their lives to see how the campus has changed and to support the Tigers. Although it is located in a small town, the school is big enough that there is never a dull moment, and the location only makes the student body closer to one another. As anyone who has been to Clemson knows, the students’ blood here is orange, and the Clemson spirit is contagious for almost anyone who attends. But why?The BEST Things * Excellent athletics * School spirit * Safety and security * Friendliness of the town * Modernity of facilities”I love Clemson. When I’m away, I just want to be back; all my friends agree. College is a world of its own. If you want it all—good academics, great people, Greek life, sports, school spirit, seriously consider Clemson. I never had ‘that’ school where I wanted to go. I simply had an idealized vision of having a classic college experience. Clemson is pretty close.” “I’ve had really good experiences with my teachers. There are a couple professors that I go out with for lunch or for coffee. There are a lot of professors whom I consider to be friends of mine first and professors second.”No school is completely perfect, however. Turn to College Prowler for Clemson’s pros AND cons.”Clemson is definitely a ‘college town.’ Without the school, there is not much to it. Downtown consists mainly of one street. Outside of Clemson there is not much to do; I can’t name any outrageously cool museums, clubs, or restaurants to goto.”"You should know before coming that Clemson, because of its location in the Bible Belt of the South, is still under the ‘blue laws’, which means that there is no selling of alcohol on Sundays. This also means the bars close at midnight on Saturday nights.”Get both sides

Shania Twain’s second record, The Woman in Me, became a blockbuster, appealing as much to a pop audience as it did to the country audience. Part of the reason for its success was how producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange — best known for his work with Def Leppard, the Cars, and AC/DC — steered Twain toward the big choruses and instrumentation that always was a signature of his speciality, AOR radio. Come on Over, the sequel to The Woman in Me, continues that approach, breaking from contemporary country conventions in a number of ways. Not only does the music lean toward rock, but its 16 songs and, as the cover proudly claims, “Hour of Music” break from the country tradition of cheap, short albums of ten songs that last about half an hour. Furthermore, all 16 songs are Lange-Twain originals, and Twain’s sleek, sexy photos suggest a New York fashion model, not a honky tonker. And there isn’t any honky tonk here, which is just as well, since the fiddles are processed to sound like synthesizers and talk boxes never sound good on down-home, gritty rave-ups. No, Twain sticks to what she does best, which is countrified mainstream pop. Purists will complain that there’s little country here, and there really isn’t. However, what is here is professionally crafted country-pop (even the filler — which there is unfortunately too much of — sounds good), delivered with conviction if not style by Twain, and that is enough to make it a thoroughly successful follow-up to the most successful country album by a female in history. [The Australian edition has a completely different track order and features three bonus tracks: "(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here" and different versions of "Love Gets Me Every Time" and "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)."] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
